Beamforming for DOA estimation

Hi
I want to simulate few beamforming techniques in matlab for DOA estimation and understand the underlying Mathematics. Please if some one can guide me how and where to start with.
Please if anyone can refer some good articles/books in this regard

There are several examples on this topic using Phased Array System Toolbox here
For a good introduction on the topic, Krim have a good overview paper
Then of course Van Tree's book
