Issues while importing excel file

I have this very basic problem while importing a xlsx file and not able to figure out the reason. I import the file using the following command and end up getting a value in (1,1) and the rest as NaN.
data=('coordinates.xlsx'); coord=xlsread(data);
Can someone point out whats the problem here. Thank you

What made this file? If you open it in Excel, you can see that the cells seem to be randomly formatted as either cell or numbers. Make that program save them all as numbers, not text, and you will be okay.
