Can I convert binary image into polygon or vector?

I want to make trajectory for mobile robot using an image (jpg, etc.) from my gallery. Someone told me to convert it into binary image first and I did it. Then I have to convert it into vector image so robot knows the direction, and i don't get how?. Thanks for help.
