Extract Image from PDF file

Hello, i need to import an image of a page from a PDF file, i've been able to do this using ghostscritp, but the problem is that it has to read the PDF and write the image to a file, and then a different routine has to read the image from the file, and this process takes more time that the actual processing i do with the image afterwards.
Is there a way to route the output image straight to matlab instead of a file?
