Plot an earth map behind a contour plot

I have a contour plot where my x-axis[0-144], and my y-axis[0:72]. I would like to have the contour lines of earth map behind my figure on the same set of axis. Thanks for help!

This can be done with the Mapping Toolbox and contourm()

But my matrix size 72X144, and the contour map they provide in matlab help is at size 180X360, so they cannot fit in the same figure.

The map you are overlaying does not need to have the same granularity as the contour matrix. The lat and lon that you pass into contourm() will indicate where on the map your data relates to.

contourm(lat, lon, Z)
where lat and lon have data that only happens to span a subset of the lat and lon range for whatever map you are using.
