Is it the same when we say dpi (dots per inch) as pixels per inch?

See question line. Are they equivalent terms? How someone can determine whether the image is appropriate for printing with good quality?

I know that an acceptable amount for good quality on printing is 300 dpi and up, but not less. How do I find this information with Matlab?

If I use a calibration tool and know how many pixels are per inch (2.54cm), is it the same as dots per inch?
