Vehicle network toolbox - how to read a channel with conversion rule?

Hello,
I am using Matlab 2017b with the vehicle network toolbox for quite a while now. Thanks for the good work!
There is one kind of channel I cannot load with the tool: it is a status variable with a numerical value range (e.g. 0-9) where some numbers are linked to a certain text in a "conversion rule" (see picture of CANape properties below). When using the read function, I get the error "Numerical value returned as physical value unsensible.", no matter what output format or other options I try. The input file is from measured from an flexray .a2l and saved as .mf4 (version 4.1) in CANape 16.
We do have similar status variables that I can read, and I found they do not have a conversion rule.
Is there a way to read channels with conversion rules (preferably as a numerical value)?
