write to network drive from linux system

I have mounted a network drive through nautilus, that means the path looks like this:
/run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share:server=SOME.SERVER.URL,share=SOMESHARE/PATH/ON/NETWORK/DRIVE
this is fine for the most part, I can cd around in matlab, I create files, I can read files.
I cannot However write to files, as i get an error:
"The filename specified was either not found on the MATLAB path or it contains unsupported characters."
Why do I get this error only when writing to a file (and not while reading/creating)?
Is there any way around this? I can see the problem with having the symbols "=:.," in the path, but I don't know any way around this, so I must learn to write instead.
