Categorical variable in cell array?

This seems absurdly trivial but I haven't found the right syntax...I was trying to add a categorical variable to a cell array to import the whole cell array into a table. But, I couldn't find a way to make it happen excepting by brute force loop or equivalently, arrayfun. There seems no equivalent to num2cell, etc., ... ???
