How can I customise the axes toolbar?

Since we are provided with a new feature (axestoolbar) which has the potential to improve UX for deployed applications I have been trying to customise the appearence of the toolbar. I would like to be able to resize the toolbar so that it is more accessible.
Looking at the objects in question there is a ToolbarHeight property that is unsettable, which would be a straightforward way to achieve this. There is also a Transform object with a Matrix property involved that will change the toolbar size, but it gets reset every time the toolbar appears.
Is there any way to make this toolbar larger? Currently is is really rather small, and does not appear to resize with the size of the axes in question.
