Best data management for multiple users

For creating matlab apps where multiple users might be connected or adding data, what techniques are efficient to store data/variables across all users while eliminating any issues that could be caused if multiple people want to change/add to the same place? For example, adding 2 items to an inventory list by 2 different users, and having that real time list be accessed/viewed by others. I am currently using excel and access to store data along with mat files.
