Do not use eval()
Do use fullfile() . For example fullfile(DirIn, '*.wav')
You can only pass that strcmp() if name(7:8) is '01' so the movefile() can only execute in that case. So in the movefile(), name(7:8) is known to be '01' and str2num() of it will be 1 and int2str() of that is known to be '1' Therefore you can be sure that the right hand side will be the same as fullfile(DirOut, '1') . Is it intended that there is a subdirectory named 1 ? Is there any reason not to preserve leading 0's in the subdirectory name, directory 01 02 03 ... 09 10 11 and so on? That would sort in order when you used dir() whereas directory names 1 2 3 .. 9 10 11 would sort as 1 10 11 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
