How to perform Sobel filter and HOG ?

Hi. I need some help. I want to extract features from signature image by using HOG features. But before that, I need to
1)Calculate horizontal and vertical brightness values at each pixel. Then, get the horizontal and vertical gradient magnitude and direction.
2) At HOG stage, seperate blocks into 8x8 cell and each cell contain its own magnitude and direction
How can I code this ? Urgent, I really need help. Im stuck right now
a= getimage(handles.axes2)
[Gx,Gy]=imgradientxy(a,'Sobel')
[Gmag,Gdir]=imgradient(Gx,Gy)

How to perform Sobel filter and HOG ?
Read Input image, say "I"
Sobel, see detail here
result=edge(I);
HoG, see detail here
features_data=extractHOGFeatures(I)

Ok I see it. But how can I combine to display both at the same axes ?
