what gets returned when a client reads a ThingsSpeak channel field that has no value assigned to it??

I have a TS channel that has a field that is defined to be an integer, but has not been assigned a value. When my device reads this field, what is returned? a zero?
I'd like to know in order to program for the case when there is no value yet assigned.
