Is there any way to monitor the progress of a script while publishing?

I have a long-running script that I want to run with the publish command. Normally, without using publish, the script will print progress to stdout, but when publishing all of this output is suppressed (or redirected) to the output html or doc file. Is there any way to keep the output to the screen or to otherwise monitor the progress of a script when publishing?
