This message appears now on startup, sounds very serious, but gives no direction as to what to do. Any direction on troubleshooting is appreciated.

Did you move or delete a file or rename one of the Matlab directories?

I had the same problem which was solve by deleting those two files in my Matlab paths:
  • pathdef.m
  • startup.m
Maybe that information can help someone else.
