Implementation differences between regular tall array operations and mapreduce

Hello together,
I have a question regarding the way Matlab processes the data with a tall array, and more specifically what is the difference to mapreduce.
I could of course code the two and compare the performance but I would like to understand the underlying mechanism.
The mechanism for mapreduce is clearly described in the matlab documentation.
This is nonetheless not the case for regular operations on tall array.
So, imagine I have a tall array which is a vector of temperature records and that I want to take the max of it, what will be the difference between taking the max of the tall array and using a mapreduce implementation?
Thanks in advance.
