The Linux write-up on dealing with that is at https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/100235-why-can-t-i-activate-matlab-or-start-the-network-license-manager-in-a-newer-linux-environment and https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/102676-how-can-i-activate-matlab-on-a-linux-machine-that-does-not-have-an-eth0-device
However, those are not really relevant to Mac.
Do you happen to be using a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro that has no ethernet ports, just WiFi or a USB-C connector? Sufficiently new MATLAB are supposed to be able to use the WiFi interfaces in such cases. Which MATLAB release are you using?

Not sure. Search for the solution ID and see if you can follow the instructions. If not, contact support.

In a couple of the MATLAB versions just after MacBook Air was first released, in order to use MATLAB it was necessary to use a Lightning to Ethernet cable and plug the MacBook into an ethernet connection. That occured because the MacBook Air did not have any hard-wired ethernet port (as it was designed around Wi-Fi), and the MATLAB hardware authentication looked specifically for hardwired ethernet. That was a number of years ago, and MATLAB was upgraded some time ago to be able to look for Wi-Fi ports instead -- but if your MATLAB is old enough then it just might be a problem.
