How to tell where an application hangs

I have a long running Matlab application that "hangs" at a certain point during the processing. However, if I try to interrupt it with CTRL-C nothing happens. The only way to stop it is to kill the Matlab process in the Windows task manager. This happens even if I run the code in the debugger (setting a breakpoint and pressing continue).
It's very hard to debug as I really don't know where to start looking in the code.
Any idea to tell where the hang occurs?
Matlab consumes CPU during the "hang" so this may be a logic error in the code sending it into an infinite loop. The code also calls some Java routines. I'm using R2018b under Windows.

For learning CFD and FEA with Matlab you can maybe try the FEATool Multiphysics toolbox with built-in modeling and simulation tutorials.
