If you recently reinstalled MATLAB, then please make sure you followed these instructions:
https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/101795-how-do-i-uninstall-or-reinstall-matlab-on-a-windows-computer
If the missing .M file is a custom one that you wrote, then make sure that you add it to the path.
If it is a new version of MATLAB, then restart your computer after correct installation and enter the following in the MATLAB command window:
restoredefaultpath
rehash toolboxcache
savepath
