How I input an array of numbers in GUI text box?

I want to enter an array of numbers in the TEXTBOX in GUI. In my code I'm converting the array of strings to array of numbers.
In the textbox when I give input as- [1 2 3 4 5].
After using
x=str2double(get(handles.edit1,'string'));
Im getting x Nan.
and get(handles.edit1,'string') = '[1 2 3 4 5]'.
What I want is x=[1,2,3,4,5]. Please suggest a solution. Thanks in advance

Use str2num instead:
x=str2num(get(handles.edit1,'string'));
