gradient_sq_minus_value==(I_vertical-
I_horizontal).*(I_vertical+I_horizontal);
(gradient_for_bg_under) = (I_horizontal.*I_horizontal) +
(I_vertical.*I_vertical);

may be due to formatting or may be due to the parentheses around the variable gradient_for_bf_under while being assigned the value. Try using the following instead

gradient_sq_minus_value == (I_vertical-I_horizontal).*(I_vertical+I_horizontal);
gradient_for_bg_under = (I_horizontal.*I_horizontal) + (I_vertical.*I_vertical);

For gradient_sq_minus_value, do you really mean to use equality == ?
