trouble installing on Linux VM

I've been having lots of issues trying to install 2020a on a Ubuntu VM. At first it was display problems but I think that's takedn care of because x forwarding is now working with other apps. When i try to run the install executable now I get:
"terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error'
what(): Unable to launch the MATLABWindow application
Aborted (core dumped)"
One strange this is tht when I unziped the installer download is didn't create a new directory but dumped everything into the current directory. Don't know if that's an issue. Any guidance is appreciated.

Someone at my institutions computing center figured out that the install_unix_legacy binary works. It's in /bin/glnxa64 of the extracted files.
