When using clabel with contour, how can one control label locations along a contour line?

As far as I know, the only "knobs" that can be turned are specifying a vector of contour levels that are to be labeled, label spacing. I have used these but have found that MatLab still places labels on top of each other at times and other times places labels that are part on and part off the plotting area. Still other times the label are placed poorly. For Example, all labels are close to the edge of the plot or in areas where lines are close while there are other areas toward the middle of the plot with lines that are less closely spaced.
Is there a manual way to better control label placement that I can easily externally automate to work in general?
I'm trying to make 100's of plots and load them into LaTex without having to tweak each plot as this would take too long manually.

To my knowledge there isn't away to control this.
