Reading an image from multiple folders

I'm using the ATT face archive and I need to be able to read 1 image from each folder. There are 40 folders in total with 10 pictures of the same person in different positions. I split the photos 70% training and 30% validation. I need to read 1 image from each folder of the validation set, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do that.
