Stop Sign Detection Using Thresholding

Hi I'm trying to do something similar to this article. I'm assuming using more recent Matlab functions it would be a lot easier to detect a stop sign. I'm really inexperienced, but I'm wondering if anyone has sample code of stop sign recongnition using thresholding or edge detection.
