How to detect and separate individual squares from the image i am attaching?(not necessarily in RGB)

Why not post this as your own new question rather than hijack velflash's discussion (who obviously doesn't care about this anymore since he never provided an image)? Then you can tell me the use case, and I can tell you about how to threshold the blue channel and find the connected components.
