Placing multiple zoomed-in plot on top of a larger plot

I have a graph and I would like to place several smaller plot somewhere out of the way on the large plot. There smaller plot would simply be zoomed in portions of the larger plot. I would like to specify where to zoom in, where the smaller plot would go on the large one, and also label the smaller plot.
For instance, perhaps I would like to zoom in on x:{-1,1}, y:{-1,1} and place it in the upper right hand corner. The smaller plot should of course show up in the upper right, show the -1,1 rectangle, have axis labels from -1 to 1, and have a title, "Generic Title."
I have seen some code that should provide a solution but I'm still new to MATLAB and did not really understand what was happening. The results I got were usually blank or not representative of my graph.
So if you could explain what each argument and function means/does, that would be great.
