command window not refreshing

I've been using R2012a on a Mac with OSX 10.8 for at least several months now without issue, but today on starting Matlab I found no windows would update until I resize them; i.e. I can type into the command window and see what I've typed only after resizing the window. I've just tried reinstalling matlab - no luck. Any help is really appreciated!!
