Is it possible to show a square surface with an empty circular center?
Well, I know that in MATLAB we are talking matrices, but I was wondering if we can handle cases like this with MATLAB somehow. I want to use this shape as a frame for an imagesc plot. So, the center should be empty to allow the imagesc plot behind to be visible.
Any comments would be really appreciated!

Yes, it is possible.
The implementation depends on what exactly "empty circular center" means. You can draw a white square with a black circle at the center. Or the circle can have the color of the background of the axes or figure. Or this can be used as binary mask or alpha channel.
