Problems with text in figures

Hi,
since we recently reinstalled Matlab on our linux server and changed the windows manager to icewm, I have problems with the text in figures. This problems appears in all kinds of figures no matter how I create them.
My question is now, how can this happen? Do I have to change some preferences, might this occur due to a mssing graphics tool, or could the windows manager be the reason for this?

Do you have the xorg-font* packages installed?
