ncread error in 64bit MATLAB

I'm having an issue, trying to run a script reading data from a netcdf file, which works fine in R2011a (32bit), but not in R2012b (64bit):
When loading a big amount of data from a .nc file using the 'ncread' function, my computer completely stalls while using the 64bit MATLAB version. Doing the same in the 32bit version works fine.
Can anyone give a hint to what might be the problem?
