You can, but you with a Student license you can have only one activated at a time, so you need to deactivate the computer you're not using and activate the one you want to use. With Windows, you can activate/deactivate from the Start button. Not sure about iMacs. You can also do it from the Mathworks web site. You are limited to a certain number of switches per year but I'm not sure if that number is the number of computers you use, or the number of switches you do. You have 2 computers but might want to switch activations dozens of times per year. You can always call the Mathworks for free and ask these kinds of questions for an authoritative answer.
If you have an Academic license, the rules are different than a student license. Again, you can call your local office and ask.

The limit is the number of switches you do, and the limit is (or used to be) 4 times per year.
Students that get their license from their university usually have what is considered an Education license, which can be activated on two computers and used on one at a time.
However, when you get an error -9 then the problem is that you did not activate using your user name as known to the computer. This will never be a Microsoft Live email address, and will never be your email address.
