read and write data from DAQ card

Hi,
I want to do real-time control with matlab (not simulink), and read from one input and then send a signal to a plant with a DAQ card (to be more specific, Advantech 1716).
I dont know how to read and write in matlab, and as I searched, in every solution they said build a simulink. Is there any way to do this just with matlab codes?
