Please avoid posting multiple thread containing the same questions, see http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/87007-overlay-two-image-matrix-together. Now both threads contains answers and the confusion level is increased without any need.

Try imfuse() or imshowpair().

You used a + instead of a comma. Try imfuse(H,V). Plus you need to have a modern version of MATLAB. You probably should upgrade to R2013b, because you probably have an ancient version.

It depends a lot on your images and what you exactly want, but did you try to just sum them?
overlay_im=image1+image2;
If this is not what you need, please elaborate more on what you would like to achieve.

thank you.but this is not the result what i want. this is my problem, i have two images derived from one image. image1=vertical edges of the original image image2=horizontal edges of the original image now i want to overlay both without summing them

Ah, assuming that your images are binary images you could do:
overlay_im=image1|image2;

Image Analyst's answer to use imfuse is good. To use imfuse, you have to have the Image Processing Toolbox with version R2012a or later.
Another option is imoverlay on the File Exchange.
