Do I need to install the MCR on a system that already has MATLAB installed?

My system has MATLAB installed on it. I would like to know if I should install the MCR for MATLAB Compiler 4.0 (and later) on this system in order to run a MATLAB Compiler-generated application that was sent to me by a MATLAB Compiler user.

If the system in question has the same version of the MATLAB Compiler installed as that of the original application developer, there is no need to install the MCR.
If the system in question has a different version of the MATLAB Compiler installed from that of the original application developer, the MCR must be installed.
If the system in question has MATLAB but not the MATLAB Compiler installed, the MCR must be installed.
If your MATLAB installation seems to have problems after installing the MCR, you can delete your preferences and restart MATLAB to fix the issue.
You can find out where your preferences are stored by executing the following command on the MATLAB command prompt:
prefdir
