Hide:
set(gca,'visible','off') %hide the current axes
set(get(gca,'children'),'visible','off') %hide the current axes contents
Show:
set(gca,'visible','on') %show the current axes
set(get(gca,'children'),'visible','on') %show the current axes contents
If needed replace gca by the handle of the axes you wish to work with
