Precise measurement of the directional properties of a microwave antenna takes place in an anechoic chamber in which interfering radiation reflecting off walls and test equipment is reduced using absorbent materials. If these are effective at the test frequency, the anechoic chamber measures the directional properties of a radiator in empty space by incremental rotation of the radiator relative to a distant field detector in a noise environment of little or no coherent interference or environmental noise. Such measurements and many more are much easier in a virtual anechoic chamber in which the chamber elements, radiator, and detector, are replaced by three dimensional models subject to translation and rotation using interactive graphical software. The virtual anechoic chamber here developed in MATLAB App Designer will serve as a versatile graphing calculator for the myriad quantities and fields and concepts which comprise antenna theory.
The main screen of the virtual anechoic chamber is configured to present at the origin a half wave dipole resonant at 150 MHz. The wavelength is 2 m and the element length is 1 m. A target dA = 4 m^2 is aligned on the z axis at range 1 m. This target intercepts 7.813 W of power. The total power emitted by the radiator is 36.89 W, with peak element current 1 A. The Poynting vector at the target is 4.29 W/m^2 in the z direction.
Graphic dr shows the transverse electromagnetic waves over two wavelengths along a radius dr extending from dA. The electric field at the target is 56 V/m and the magnetic field is .15 A/m. In graphics XY, YZ, ZX, the distribution of power flux characteristic of the half wave is shown in blue.
The radiator is rotated by 36 degrees. The resulting rotation in fields and current can be seen numerically on the right, and in graphic dr. Note that this rotation does not alter the Poynting vector at the target or the total power emitted.
