Advancing 5G for A New Decade

Dr. John Smee, Qualcomm

We are at the beginning of a decade of 5G wireless technology evolution, with new 5G improvements for mobile broadband experiences and smartphones, and 5G proliferation into new devices, services, spectrum, and deployments. With recent advancements in 5G and AI, we are transforming the intelligent wireless edge, which will unleash new capabilities and efficiencies that weren’t possible previously. We will explore how 5G is enabling a vast variety of industries, including Industrial IoT, Automotive, and extended reality (XR). For instance, 5G will enable the wireless smart factory of the future, providing ultra-reliable and low-latency services required to connect a wide range of industrial IoT services. On the automotive front, 5G can not only improve our infotainment experience but also make our roads and intersections safer. Boundless extended reality (XR) is a new human interface that will make our interactions with the digital and virtual worlds more immersive. These are just a few examples that show how 5G is at the foundation of our increasingly connected world. Join this session to see where we are with 5G today, what’s included in the recently completed 3GPP 5G NR Release 16 specifications, and how we are driving 5G into the future.
