Senior Application Engineer (Wireless)

Job Summary

As an Application Engineer (AE), you will act as a link between MathWorks and top manufacturers of communication industry. You will demonstrate how to use MATLAB and Simulink to design and develop algorithms and deploy systems involving digital communications standards such as cellular (LTE, 5G), WiFi (802.11), satellite (DVB-S2) or other wireless standards. You will work closely with customers to uncover obstacles in their engineering process and then collaborate with a MathWorks team in sales, marketing, and development to build convincing technical examples that demonstrate the value of using MATLAB in the customer’s development cycle.

Application Engineers have the opportunity to develop technical expertise in many MathWorks products, expand their industry knowledge, work on cross functional teams, and advance into leadership roles throughout the MathWorks. It is well established that AEs play a vital role in the success of the MathWorks.

Responsibilities

The wireless AE will use his/her technical knowledge and presentation skills in activities that directly and indirectly boost product sales. These activities include:

Supporting & interacting directly with customers

The AE will use their product knowledge and industry experience to engage prospective customers and demonstrate how MATLAB can help them design and deploy wireless systems. The AE will also gather feedback and identify industry trends during these engagements to influence future development and marketing initiatives.

Developing product “proof-of-concept” demonstrations

AEs build feature rich product demonstrations providing guidance to customers on how to use software to develop and deploy systems that include baseband processing, RF and Analog-Mixed Signal circuitry. These demonstrations are the proof that our software tools can solve complex, real-world problems. 

The AE will use MATLAB, Simulink, Communications System Toolbox, WLAN Toolbox, LTE System Toolbox, 5G Toolbox, Phased Array System Toolbox, Antenna Toolbox, RF Blockset, and other related tools to:

  • Design, analyze, and simulate models across Wireless applications
  • Model RF impairments and algorithms that mitigate them.
  • Create application examples that use MathWorks tools and third party tools or hardware from Keysight, Analog Devices, etc. to demonstrate workflows to customers.

Publication of Articles and Delivery of Seminar and Trade Show Presentations

AEs publish articles in trade journals and engineering publications that highlight the best features for product applications. In addition, they develop and present to large audiences at industry trade shows. They are the key technical presenter at public seminars where they demonstrate our technology to audience members ranging from industry to academia.

Collaborate with development to impact our products

AEs collaborate and work closely with product development to fill product feature gaps and provide requirements for new features

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree and 7 years of professional work experience (or a master's degree and 5 years of professional work experience, or a PhD degree) is required.
  • Candidates must be willing to travel 25% to 50% of the time

Additional Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication 
  • Excellence in presenting & presentation building
  • Strong knowledge of modern communications algorithms
  • Experienced at link level modeling, including channel models
  • Experience in MATLAB
  • Experience in C or C++
  • Willingness to learn new tools and skills as required

Pluses:

  • Knowledge of wireless communications standards (LTE, 5G, 802.11)
  • Understanding of circuits such as PLL, LNA, HPA, mixer, RF/IF filters
  • Experienced at system level modeling for communications systems using tools like NS3
  • Experience with RF simulation tools
  • Experience with Antenna design
  • Experience with lab & test equipment

  • Have a desire to listen to customers and present software solutions while setting reasonable expectations.

Be open to travel throughout China specific to various seminars and customer visits. Though far less frequent, some international travel is expected. The candidate should expect to travel about 30% of the time with trips generally no longer than 4 days
