Apply hatched patterns to a NxM image . PROBLEM!!

Hello,
I'm trying to apply hatched pattern to an image and I'm having a lot of problems with the functions I have found. The problem is that most functions creates a new figure from the figure H, or H can alternatively be a uint8 NxMx3 matrix. The problem is that I have only an image NxM (For example, my image can be all black with a masc which value is 12). What I need is to fill this object with a pattern and an specific color.
Please It would be nice if someone help me. Thanks Silvia

Please attach original image and desired output image (mock something up in Photoshop if you have to).
