Controlling gap and retaining actual image size in subplot

In creating my figure, I want to be able to retain the actual image size and get rid of the gap between the images. At the moment, the images are plotted correctly but they are smaller than they should be and there is a big gap between them.
figHandle = figure;
set(figHandle,'color','w');
for i = 1:(yHigh*xWide)
if trackFaces(i) ~= 0
face = imgTarget;
subplot(yHigh,xWide,i); subimage(face); axis off;
end
end
I have searched extensively for a solution, even used subtightplot, etc but nothing works as I want it to. Any help is appreciated.

Either you find a contribution in the File Exchange, which is good enough, or you have to implement your own.
