How does one merge cells in a Table in MS Word or PPT?

I am trying to merge cells in a Table on a powerpoint slide. I have a 5x5 table and want to merge all the cells in the second row. When I try anything starting with tableH.Table.Rows(2) I get an error that I have exceeded the matrix dimension. Help!

Kenneth - it may be helpful if you include some more of the code that you have written to provide some context for the reader. Are you creating a COM serve with actxserver?
