MATLAB breaks global shortcuts in os x?

I have a few global shortcuts in os x 10.8.5 set up through System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Services. These work fine in all other apps i've tested, in MATLAB R2013a however nothing seems to happen. I've made sure there's no conflicting shortcuts in MATLAB but still no luck. Any ideas?
