Perhaps you can try fitting that using the Sum of Sines Model.
load gait.mat;
f1 = fit(time, theta1, 'sin6')
f2 = fit(time, theta2, 'sin6')
plot(f1, time, theta1), hold on
plot(f2, time, theta2), hold off
