Why do I receive License Manager Error -29?

When starting MATLAB I receive the following error:

ERROR: License checkout failed. Cannot find ethernet device. License Manager Error -29

How do I resolve this?

This error can occur on a Mac OS X machine if there is no built-in ethernet device and you try to start the Network License Manager on the machine. In order for the license manager to work, there must be an Ethernet device on the machine and that Ethernet device must be labeled "en0."
