IS MATLAB THE ADEQUATE APPLICATION TO EXTRACT INFO ABOUT SPECIFIC BRAINWAVES FROM AN EEG - EDF FILE ?

Dear all,
I am currently starting a Doctoral project for which I need to be able to analyse EEG data.
I am using an EMOTIV EPOC+ system, which allows me to save the recorded EEG as an EDF file.
I wonder if MATLAB is the right tool for me to be able to extract specific information regarding the Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma Brainwave from the EDF file recorded.
I tried to find an answer on MathWorks website but I can't find the answer and there is no way to email the company directly. As for my local reseller....well let's say that is far to be his priority ;)
