Image Registration 2D

I am trying to develop skills with image registration for a project. I am using two test images of the front of a car taken at different times from slightly different positions, so that there will be translation, skew, shear and luminosity variance. I am starting with images which should be fairly easily registered but am not getting the results I would have expected. The transformation function I am using is CP2tform and have experimented with 'affine', and 'picecewise 'linear'.
Assistance would be appreciatated, I am quite happy to share code and imagesamples.
