Import excel file!

So I have to import data from a excel file (xx.csv), it has data types as character and Ascii-real. I used num=xlsread(filename), this opens the columns with numbers . How do I open columns with data type as character??

To retrieve the string or non-numeric data, use two outputs from xlsread:
[num, str] = xlsread(filename);
The ‘num’ variable will have the numeric values, and the ‘str’ variable will have the non-numeric (character) values as a cell array.
