How to upgrade a model detached Simulink.ConfigSet in a .mat file from an older version to the current version

We separate model configuration from slx model file. This allows applying the same configuration to several models i.e. code generation settings. The ConfigSet is stored in a .mat file and then brought into a workspace variable that is referenced by a model. Is there an easy way to upgrade such a .mat file with command line?
